Mariners shine in baseball bash

At Libby, the Mission Valley A Mariners played some of their best baseball of the season as they battled their way through the competition and into the championship where they would take home the second place share of the Big Bucks prize money.

The Mariners opened the tournament against the Idaho-based Northern Lakes Mountaineers in which hurler Eric Dolence held the Mountaineers in check during a 1-1 deadlock until the offense erupted in the top of the seventh to account for the margin of the 4-1 victory.

On Saturday, the Mariners maximized their opportunities by plating three runs on no hits to edge the Blue Devils from Moscow 3-2.

In their Sunday tournament format game, Mission Valley would dispatch the Calgary Cubs 10-1 for their third straight win, slotting them into the championship against the only other undefeated team at the tournament in the AA Bruins from Walla Walla, Wash.

Quality of play had to be crisp against a higher caliber level of competition like Walla Walla. While Mission Valley would compete, the Bruins exploited chinks in Mariner armor much like urban acclimated bears sometimes pry their way into places they don’t belong despite the best containment efforts designed to keep them out. The Mariners found themselves saddled with a sizeable deficit midway through the contest, but were able to counter with four runs.

While coming up short in the championship may have been distasteful, encouraging trends emerged from this weekend that bode well for the level of team competitiveness the remaining duration of the season.
